This is hilarious. Reminds me of a friend who told me about a classmate who skipped a final exam because of her "grandmother's funeral." The prof demanded proof, and she typed up a whole funeral program...complete with her grandma's picture, some psalms...the whole nine yards. She gave it to the professor and demanded an apology...which she got!

I'm a huge fan of the Brown philosophy, but this right here is a (hopefully rare) example of how the open curriculum can fail its students. I am almost reluctant to admit that the author's theories would have likely been quashed by the distribution requirements of a more standard education. It sounds like she would have benefited from following the example of her hard science classmates and branching out a little, instead of spending half of her available credits in a single department.

It turns out that in some academic disciplines, there is not more than one right answer; in this case, established neurobiological principles trump "personal beliefs."

That depends a lot on what field you go into as well. For instance, in education, you may be able to get an interview through the people you know, but I know many people who were thrown out of the interview pool based on the fact that they had a low GPA. It's a balance between having the drive to at least ATTEMPT to achieve in the classroom and showing what you know and can do. Having a GPA that starts with a 0 or 1 will not impress the people who are interviewing. I'm curious where you found your information claiming that grades and GPA do not matter. Are these based on discussions you've had? Articles you've read? Personal biases? Where did you find this information?

Shitty school in a shitty town. They keep sucking money away from academics to pump it into their mediocre football team. Dorms are falling apart and overcrowded, no alcohol sales in town or on Sunday, cops are absolute dicks, student body is way uptight and straight-laced, nothing but church-related things to do on or off campus. Also, Student Housing will monitor your Facebook and will come and talk to you about things they deem "questionable".

This is the school your parents want you to attend because it's oh-so-safe and boring. Four years here is like a four-year prison sentence, except you can leave. In fact, on weekends the school and the town empty out and if you don't have a way out yourself, you're stuck in a ghost town for the weekend. If you must attend school in Louisiana, go to one of the ULs or LSU-BR. They're cheaper and infinitely superior.

There is no upside to this school. You will leave with a couple dozen grand in debt and a degree that most employers couldn't give a shit about.

Hi Kimberly,

I stumbled upon this blog randomly and decided to comment. My name is Randy and I am currently in college as well. I loved the article and it is something that I have struggled with all my life. It was a struggle with identity and telling people where I was from was almost a task. I dealt with the same issues you did. I also have three females who were all of Indian descent and the racial problems were such a shock to me. To me I was Indian; I even have religion covered because my mom's side was Christian and my dad's side was Hindu so religion shouldn't be a problem right? Wrong! Culture over love was everything. I was very shocked by how strong a hold culture has and how backwards we still are as humans despite this new global dependency. The racial stigmas on Guyanese people that we all drink, party, and are unruly was so disturbing to me and to experience from people who I thought would understand (people of Indian descent who I thought were my own) really sent my mind in a frenzy. I just thought it was really interesting to read your article and it was very uplifting!

I'm scared of needles. My mom got her's and said that it just burn. Hey...that's cool and all but...for me though...I don't care if it burns or not...it's still a freaking needle and I'm still a freaking "cry baby" when it comes to them. I'm 25 no tattoos cause of needles. Hey if the flu shot feels like getting my ears pierced then I'll do it but if it feels like anything else you best believe that my heart will be beating really fast and I just might fall out.
